More jazz!

Haven't been posting any jazz music lately so I guess it's time for some more jazz. Today's song is called 'Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise' and it's a semi-standard. One of my favorite versions of this song is by the pianist Sonny Clark; unfortunately this song has been forgotten by many, but worry not, I'm here to bring this forgotten piece of art to all of you!

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

Phantom Planet

Today's tip: the band Phantom Planet. I found out about them when one of their songs, 'Lonely Day', was used in the credits of a Belgian TV show a couple of years back. They are most known for writing the theme song for the popular series 'The O.C.', their song 'California'. They're an American (Californian) band that plays alternative rock / indie rock. If you like them and want to go see them live, I have some bad news for you though. The band took a break in 2008, though they wanted it to be clear that they hadn't broken up, they just felt like taking a break and they don't know when they'll regroup yet. So if you really want to go see a Phantom Planet gig, you're going to have to be very, very patient and hope for the best (I'm crossing my fingers with you ;D )
Don't have much else to say about them, really; on to a couple of songs!

There's also another song they wrote that I absolutely love but it's not on Youtube for some reason :/
EDIT: found it! We're in luck, it was only posted 2 days ago; enjoy!

PROTIP: this is a great song to wake up to

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

I kinda feel like skapunk today

The sun is shining and the grass is green. At least I think the grass is green; I live in the city so I'm not really sure about the color of grass anymore. But the sun is shining, that's for sure. Well, technically the sun is always shining, but what I meant was that it's nice weather around here SERIOUSLY IS ANYBODY EVEN PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT I'M SAYING ANYMORE

/ragequit

(15 minutes of bashing my head on my desk later)
So, skapunk. Perhaps I should start off with a rather classic tune; 'Why Can't We Be Friends' by 'Smash Mouth'. Note that the song isn't originally by them, but I just like their version better (sue me) and I think you guys will too.

Fun fact about this song: it was played in space when NASA beamed it to the linking of Soviet cosmonauts and U.S. astronauts in 1975. I absolutely love random shit like this ;D
Anyway, for those of you who weren't familiar with the song, but recognize the sound of this band, I can guess why. One of their songs was used in the first Shrek movie. The song's called All Star.

Also a very cool song by a very cool band.

I have a few more cool ska(punk) bands for you, but I'm just going to post one more. If you like, I can post the others later. The band I'm gonna show you next is called Less Than Jake. I saw them live about 3 or 4 months ago. I didn't know them at all, but a friend of mine was going and asked if I wanted to come. Well, who am I to say no, right? So I went to the concert and fell in love with the hyperactive, happy, somewhat spastic tones of Less Than Jake. Here, let me show you a few of their songs.

'Liquor Store' is a very typical Less Than Jake song, it's so happy and careless. I mean, what's not to love? This is a song of their first album, a great album that I would recommend to everyone.

This is my favorite song of their latest album. It's about the decline of their home city (Gainesville, Florida aka The Lion City) due to increased drug use and crime in the last couple of years.

Also, here's your complementary cute animal pic.

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

Does it offend you, yeah?

The name of the band I'm recommending today is, as said in the title of this post, Does it Offend you, yeah? A rather strange name, I agree. I looked it up when I first encountered them and the story is as follows. They couldn't find a name for their band , but they had their first gig coming up, so they needed a name. Not being able to come up with something they all could agree on, they decided to turn on the TV and take the first thing being said on the television as their band name. And that's exactly what happened. I think it was something Ricky Gervais said in an episode of the Office, but don't quote me on that.

Now, on the to band itself. The music they make is known as dance-punk and well, frankly, that name is really accurate. It's punky and you can dance to it. Although I must point out that some of their tracks are just plain weird (e.g. Attack of the 60ft Lesbian Octopus), but still rather brilliant.

The band has recently released a new album (10 days ago I think) but I haven't had time to check that out yet, my schedule's been really busy (and it doesn't look like that's going to change very soon). So I'm only going to post music from their first album. If you like that music, tell me in the comments, and maybe I'll post some music of their new album in one of my future posts.
Also: if you have the chance to see these guys live, do it. I saw them 3 years ago when they were touring with their first album, great show, enjoyed it very much!

Now, let's take a look at some of their music.

Cool song, cool music video, 'nuff said.

Their most 'normal' song imo. Absolutely love this song and the music video is pretty sweet too :D

Well, finally, the aforementioned song, Attack of the 60ft Lesbian Octopus. I love this song because it's so much fun to throw yo hands in the air like you just don't care to this song. I don't know, whenever I heard this song, it makes me not give a crap about anything; I just want to rock out with my cock out.

Here's a baby polar bear :3

A minute of math rock.

One of my followers asked me some time ago (when I posted Mouse on the Keys) if I wanted to post some math rock. Now, who am I not to do that, right? Because I'm too lazy to do it myself, I'll post a video explaining what math rock exactly is. Well, I can tell you that the 'math' part is definitely present in this musical style.
Also, I'm not sure whether or not you guys are familiar with the musical terminology used in the vid, but I guess the explanation is clear enough.

So, that's basically the main aspect of math rock (also frequently used in post-rock). The guy in the video makes it look pretty easy, but I *guarantee* you it's not.

So for some actual songs, I like the band 'This Town Needs Guns'. Now, I must warn you guys, I'm quite sure that the majority of you won't like this, as it's a bit experimental. If that's the case, no worries, I'll post other music tomorrow for you to enjoy ;)

On a different note: I have decided to post a picture of a cute animal every day :3

Springtime!

Today is the first day of spring, and that of course means GOOD WEATHER. In the not so glorious country of Belgium anyway. This morning I woke up before the alarm went off, because the sunlight was gently carressing my face. Felt like heaven. Dear God, there's honestly no better way to wake up that doesn't involve another person ;D

Anyway, let's go on to today's tip, shall we? I figured that because the sun is shining and the grass is green, I should post some more chillout music, as many of you appreciated that when I posted it last time.
Allow me to start off with St. Germain, a French artist who makes new/acid jazz, combined with downtempo house. I know, it sounds like a weird combination, but once you hear the music, you will see it goes together like Ash and Pikachu.

If you like this song, I really recommend you check out the entire 'Tourist' album, it's full of wonderful tracks like these.

The next song I'd like to show you guys is 'A day in the Sun' by 'So Fine'.

I really, really love this song, but I can't explain why exactly I love it so much. It's so dreamy and smooth, it's like airwaves making love to your eardrums. Perfect soundtrack for a day like this.
EDIT: Listen to this song when you're stoned. Seriously.

Hope you like it folks. Wink out!

PS: because everyone loved the animals so much, here's another one :D

OH NOES!

No post yesterday or today due to lack of time.

Here's a a couple of cute animals to make up for it :3

(I got tons more, but I'll save those for when I don't have time for a music tip in the future ;D )

FUCK YEAH ROCK 'N' ROLL

So today I got up to some motherfucking cool music. It literally made my day. You know the kind of music that makes you feel pretty cool FUCKING AWESOME when listening to it? Yeah, that's what I got up to.
I'm talking, of course, about Them Crooked Vultures. I saw them live at a festival 2 and a half years ago, but it was raining superhard at that time so I had to leave because I was soaked, and to be honest I didn't really like what I heard back then either. I love them now, though, so allow me to explain why. First of all, they were the surprise act, so it was a rumor that they'd come, but nothing was confirmed yet. I hadn't heard about them, which was weird because the singer/guitarist is from Queens of the Stone Age, the drummer is from Foo Fighters (and also Nirvana) and the bassist used to play in the legendary band Led Zeppelin. Now, I had listened to a lot of Foo Fighters, Nirvana and especially Led Zeppelin in my life -not so much Queen of the Stone Age- so I was really psyched to see Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones in real life, but as it turned out, the music of Them Crooked Vultures resembled Queens of the Stone Age more than the other bands, which was a bit of a bummer, but I sure as shit didn't let it ruin my good time.

But I decided to give Them a try a couple of months later, and well, I liked it. What I like most about them? The drum fills. Even though I'm not a drummer, I absolutely love it when Grohl plays the drums. Also, he drinks a lot of coffee, which you can tell from his drumming style. Seriously, that guy can drum.
I'm also a big fan of Josh Homme now, I mean, check out his awesome riffs. How can you not like a guitarist like that?

But back to the blog now :D
The song I woke up to today is called 'Elephants'. And yes, it's pretty bombastic.

Okay so the part before the lyrics is freaking awesome right? Imagine waking up to that, huh ;D
Oh, you want more? Here's some more of that sweet rock 'n' roll.

Also, a vid about Grohl's coffee addiction that you GOT TO CHECK OUT.

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

Sad Music :(

What's up, pudding cup?
Today I'm going to post some sad music. Not because I'm sad or anything, but because I like to listen to sad music every once in a while, plus it's nice to fall asleep to.
The first song I'm posting today is 'Mad World' by Gary Jules. Well, actually the song is originally by 'Tears for Fears', but I like the version by Jules better, probably because I heard that one first. I first heard it while watching the movie Donnie Darko. It plays in the end of that movie and well, it fitted perfectly in my opinion.
Also, if you haven't seen Donnie Darko yet, go watch it now (it got an 8.3 rating on IMDB so it really IS a great movie ;D )
Anyway, here is Mad World.

Don't you think the music video is really nice too?

The second and last song for today is also a cover, but differently. Most people have probably heard of The Pixies before. Well, what I have here is a piano cover of their song 'Where is my Mind', done by a guy named Maxence Cyrin and quite frankly, it's one of the best piano songs that I have ever heard. Here, check it out.

That's nice and relaxing, isn't it?

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

PS: Let me know if you enjoyed this music, because I have a lot of sad, calm music and if you guys think it's a good idea, I can post some every Thursday :)

[Quick update]: And now for something completely different.

Holy shit, I totally forgot it's St. Patrick's today. (In my defense: we don't celebrate it in my country.) But I got something great for you guys. Check it out!

Happy St. Patty's Day y'all! Rock on, party people!

Did someone say guitar?

Alright, so as you may or may not know, I'm a musician myself. I started playing the guitar at age 8 and still play whenever I get the chance (I'm 19 now). So what I wanted to talk to you today about is one of my favorite guitarists ever. His name is Tommy Emmanuel.

He's not very unknown, but most of the people that listen to his music are 40+, which I think is a shame, because he is incredibly skilled (seriously, he's one of the best guitarists out there) and his songs are just wonderful, and I'm sure that lots of young people will appreciate and enjoy his music too!
This guy created his own special way of playing the guitar, playing bass, chords and melody all at the same freaking time. Sounds complex right? Wait til you hear him play it.
Below are some of my favorite Tommy Emmanuel songs.

His version of the famous classic 'Over the Rainbow' and also my favorite version of this song. It has a certain je ne sais quoi, I'm telling you, this man is brilliant.

But it's not always soft and smooth.

So as you see, this guy is a serious pro, if you can ever got a hold of him, go watch one of his concerts, you will not be dissatisfied!

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

My entire childhood.

Today's tip involves quite a lot of nostalgia (for me at least, I don't know what you were doing when you were a kid).

Of course I'm talking about the smash hit games of Pokemon. Oh man, I've spent hours playing those games and still I don't feel like that was wasted time. Anyway, I thought that it'd be a good idea to expose y'all to the soundtrack of those games once more to see if it triggers some nostalgia ;D

It did for me, felt like I was 8 again, playing my gameboy, totally absorbed in the game. Going on a journey, all these exciting adventures. Man those games were fun.

Anyway, here's the theme of Pallet Town:

Lovely, isn't it? :D
Now, let's go on to the next town shall we?

Remember your first gym fight? Epic stuff!

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

PS: let me know in the comments who your first starter Pokemon was! Mine was Squirtle :3

Snake Eyes

So I was watching Ocean's Thirteen yesterday. I really love those films, and not only because the plots are great or the cast is awesome, but in case you hadn't noticed yet, the music used in those movies is the bomb. For example 'Snake Eyes' by David Holmes.

This song plays when their master plan unfolds (not going to spoil the movie for anyone that hasn't seen it yet, but if you haven't, GO WATCH IT NOW). I downloaded the OST and then went shopping (whilst listening to the Ocean's 13 songs) because I needed some groceries. The weather was nice today, so I put on a pair of baggy shorts (I think shorts are extremely comfy and I wear them whenever the weather allows it), put on my sunglasses and walked to the store, nice and chill, with a whole surfer look going on, feeling like a total badass xD
So yeah, that was quite the trip to the shop!

Want another one? Here's another one by David Holmes.

I'm telling you, if I ever make a movie, this guy is going to write the soundtrack for sure! ;D
Alright, that's it for now, party people.

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

King Crimson

One of the first bands I fell in love with: King Crimson. My friend told me about them, I was about 16 at that time and both of us had recently gotten into prog rock. His father had a huge collection of old prog records and we used to spend buttloads of time in this room that had a vinyl record player and all those records. Then we'd go and try to play some prog music ourselves. Good times, I miss those days.

Anyway, King Crimson is today's topic. Now, prog rock, or progressive rock, isn't really what you'd call accessible music, so don't worry if you don't really like what you're about to hear.
I'll post two songs of their best known album, 'In the Court of the Crimson King', starting off with '21st Century Schizoid Man'.

The song takes a while to start, so just wait about 30 seconds (or skip the first 30 seconds).

The song they're most known for: 'In the Court of the Crimson King'.

Hope you like it folks. Wink out!

Feeling better!

Hi guys and sorry I didn't update my blog yesterday, but I felt really sick and didn't get out of bed at all. On the upside: I feel a lot better today, except for the fact that I'm still coughing but hey, I'm glad I got out of bed at all today. Thanks for all the supporting comments, love you guys ;D

So let's go on to today's tip. It's a song by an artist named Mr. Scruff, a dude I came across while looking up some downtempo music. I recently really took an interest in the ambient/chillout genre and I must say that there are quite some musical gems in that genre, however most of them are terribly unknown. Everybody that enjoys an evening of chillaxing after a long week of work will most probably enjoy that music.
So here's the song I was talking about earlier:

You can see that this is some chill music right here. I kinda feel guilty about not posting anything yesterday, so I'll include another tip right now in this same post. How about some hiphop mixed with new jazz? Sounds interesting? Well, you can bet your ass it is. Also very chill music, so what more can one want? The song I'm talking about is called 'Bionic', by 'Groove Collective'.
Okay so apparently that song's not on YouTube so sorry for not including the video here, but it sure is worth checking out, so if you ever have the time.

So instead I'll post a very cool Jaco Pastorius song :D

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

ZoopahVillenz

I'm still feeling sick today, my throat hurts like a motherfucker but I made a commitment when I started this blog and I'd feel even worse about letting you guys down ;)

So anyway, today's tip is a band called the Supervillains. I discovered them last month and immediately fell in love. Their kind of music is a mix of dub, reggae, ska, rocksteady and poppy punk. It's kinda hard not to like them, their music is so smooth and a lot of their lyrics are quite funny; for example, here's an excerpt of their lyrics for the song 'Ex-Girlfriend':

Ooh baby baby baby
Why did you give those crabs to me?
I know 'cause it burns when I pee
But two motherfuckers can't love
If one of em's gonna be a big dumb slut
I know because I put it in your butt

You see, that's quite funny right?

Anyway, here's a couple of their songs.

Hope you like it folks. Wink out!

Some Jazz Again

I'm feeling kind of sick today, so today's blog entry is going to be a bit shorter.

Today I got some jazz for you guys again. But not just jazz. It's something I came across some time ago and I've been dying to show it to you guys, but I waited until I had some more followers ;D
So anyway, it's not just the song that does it, but it's when you play it with a certain website in the background; allow me to demonstrate.
The website I was talking about is RainyMood
Quite frankly, it makes almost every kind of music better, but I find it especially appealing when listening to some smooth jazz music.
The song is 'The Fragrance of dark Coffee', which I will post here (so open Rainy Mood in a different tab)

That's it for today!

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

Mouse On The Keys

The music tip I'm giving you guys today is Mouse On the Keys. They're a Japanese band, but don't be fooled, they're not your average Japanese, J-pop playing band. These guys play brilliant, complex music that will simply blow you away. I'm talking rushing drums, explosive piano riffs, frankly EPIC MUSIC.
The band consists of three members, 2 guys on the keys and one guy on the drums (who can also play the piano).
I've been thinking of a way to accurately describe their genre, but I have to say it's nearly impossible and I still haven't found a way. So I'm just going to put it this way: it's sort of like a mix of jazz, post-rock and math-rock. If you haven't heard of the latter, don't worry, I'll post some math-rock on here some time!
I also thought of comparing their music to that of another band, but that too seemed impossible. Their music is simply unique, period.
The musicians themselves are really, really great. You will know what I'm talking about when you hear the songs I'm posting.
The songs I'll be posting are from their first album, 'An Anxious Object' that came out in 2008.

These are actually two songs, 'Completed Nihilism' and 'Spectres de Mouse', but I thought it'd be a good idea if I put them together, as Spectres begins where Nihilism ends.
I really think it's a shame that these guys aren't more known, because I absolutely love their music and I think it would be awesome if this music would be used in movies. I mean, wouldn't that be absolutely epic?

Anyway, if you liked this music, be sure to show the guys some love on their facebook page, I'm sure they'll appreciate it!

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

And So I Watch You From Afar

Today's music is a bit heavier than what I posted so far. And So I Watch You From Afar, or ASIWYFA for short, are a band originating from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They play post-rock, a pretty 'obscure' genre up to this day. I absolutely fell in love with this band (and this genre, for that matter) in August 2009, when I saw this very band live. They weren't very known back then and they aren't very known right now either, but they really, really do deserve to be better known in my honest opinion. This was one of the best live performances I have ever seen in my life, and that means something as I have seen quite a few.
If you are a gamer, I've got some great news for you: post-rock is the perfect gaming music. It's instrumental, it has great build-up and it explodes at the exact right moment, like the perfect video game. If you are a drummer, you will most definitely enjoy ASIWYFA's music, because seriously, this drummer is an animal.

If you have the possibility of catching a gig of them, I seriously reccomend you do and I promise you will NOT regret it.
Here's a few ASIWYFA songs.

"Set Guitars To Kill"
This is the opening track on their self titled album, and Jesus Christ, what a track. This very track defines both their music and their spirit as a band. By the way, they also played this as opening track of both their gigs I have seen so far. Explosion from the very beginning. And the great thing is: they can keep up their energy level during the whole show.

"K is for Killing Spree"
Final track on their Letters EP and also my favorite track on that EP. This song is the perfect illustration of the great build-up I talked about earlier. Great guitar riffs and great drum riffs mixed with enough energy to burn down a small city, what more does one need?

"A Little Solidarity Goes a Long Way"
Another great track of theirs, not as brutal as most of their tracks; still pretty hard, but with a bit of melancholy or something. Very hard to explain, but you'll know what I mean when you actually listen to the song.

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

David Gilmour!

Today I actually had something else in mind to post, but when I got up this morning and saw what date it was, I remembered that it was David Gilmour's birthday. This legendary guitarist played for the equally legendary band Pink Floyd, one of my favorite bands. I can still remember the day I first listened to the Dark Side of The Moon; epic stuff, I couldn't believe it.
The guy's got a sweet singing voice and his guitar playing is simply magical, it's like talking with music. So passionate, so emotional, it's perfect.

This version of Comfortably Numb is my favorite. Both Gilmour and Bowie on the vocals and then that awesome solo at the end, it's like heaven.

The Island Jam was a B-Side of the single Smile of Gilmour's last album. Lovely, lovely blues jam.

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!

Today's tip: Nightmares on Wax

NoW is a DJ from Leeds, by the name of George Evelyn. He was one of the first artists with Warp Records and is active in the chillout/downtempo genre. The following songs will definitely show where that genre got its name from.

First post with an actual music tip!

The first music tip I'll recommend to you guys is the artist Chet Baker. You may or may not have heard of him. He was a jazz musician; he played the trumpet and was a great singer. Chet contributed a lot to the 'smooth jazz' genre.

Chet Baker is one of my favorite artists that have ever lived. He wasn't very old when he died (only 59), but in the years he was active, he has made quite a lot of recordings. Following are 2 of my favorite Chet Baker songs.

"Almost Blue"
This song was recorded live in Tokyo and is one of my favorite songs ever. It's simply so melancholic, deep and emotional. Listen to it and you'll know what I mean.

"Chetty's Lullaby"
A lullaby by Chet, sang in Italian. Translation of the lyrics:

Veglierò,
questa notte solo per te,
dolce bimbo ti dirò che presto tornerò,
senza te,
sento gelo nel mio cuor,
cerco solo
l'illusione
di averti qui con me...
torneran per me le stelle,
nel mio cielo senza più nubi...
sogni d'or,
scendon lievi verso te,
dormi caro che domani,
col sol ti bacerò...

Hope you like it, folks. Wink out!
I will watch over you
tonight, only for you,
Sweet baby I will tell you I will soon be back,
Without you
I feel cold in my heart,
I search only
for the illusion
of having you here with me...
The stars will be back for me,
in my sky without clouds anymore,
sweet dreams,
they fall down lightly over you,
sleep my dear, that tomorrow,
with the sun I will kiss you...

First post!

Hi everybody! So I've decided to start a blog of my own and I must say I'm quite thrilled. The topic will be music, as this is a great passion of mine. I'll be posting songs and artists on here that I think are really worth checking out. The genres of music I'll be writing about will vary, but will mostly be jazz, classic rock, ambient, downtempo, chillout and post-rock. If you're interested in these types of music and you want to get to know new artists and such, feel free to join!
